Engineering Undeclared
The Engineering Undeclared program (EU) is designed to support students interested in majors within The Grainger College of Engineering but who are unsure of which major fits their interests and goals. Students will work with specially trained advisors to select coursework based on their interests, coupled with EU specific programming that supports the exploration of majors within the college. Students will have the ability to apply to any major in The Grainger College of Engineering, with the exception of Computer Science.
Engineering Undeclared does not have a defined curriculum map that all students take. Instead, there are specific courses required for students to declare a major. Some majors have additional transfer requirements beyond the core classes specified below
Engineering Undeclared students will formally apply to transfer into a major through the IDT process. Students will be able to apply in the semester they are completing courses required to transfer, as early as their second semester. EU students who need to complete additional required courses may apply to transfer in their third or fourth semesters. All EU students must be declared in a major by the start of their fifth semester at Illinois.
Students in EU who earn at least a 3.0 UIUC GPA and a 3.0 Specialized GPA, in addition to meeting the requirements to remain in good EU standing (see below), are pre-approved for assignment into one of their three majors of interest. While we try to place each student in their first-choice major of interest, it is not guaranteed. Placement depends on the holistic review of a student’s application to their majors of interest and major capacity. Major capacity may change from semester to semester and is not publicly available.
To remain in good EU standing, students must maintain at least a 2.5 UIUC GPA and a 2.5 Specialized GPA (all STEM courses), in addition to meeting any GPA/grade requirements that their intended major has, earning at least a B- in Eng 101, making appropriate progress in foundational and technical STEM coursework and meeting with an EU advisor each semester.
Graduation Requirements
Minimum hours required for graduation: Students may not graduate from Engineering Undeclared. Majors students declare in the Grainger College of Engineering require 128 credits to graduate.
Engineering Undeclared students should take coursework to satisfy General Education, Core Requirements, and Major Exploration Coursework. Engineering Undeclared students are not required to complete all requirements listed below prior to declaring a major.
Minimum UIUC and Specialized (STEM Courses) GPA: 2.5
University Requirements
Minimum of 40 hours of upper-division coursework, generally at the 300- or 400-level. These hours can be drawn from all elements of the degree. Students should consult their academic advisor for additional guidance in fulfilling this requirement.
The university and residency requirements can be found in the Student Code (§ 3-801) and in the Academic Catalog.
General Education Requirements
Follows the campus General Education (Gen Ed) requirements. Some Gen Ed requirements may be met by courses required and/or electives in the program.

The Engineering Undeclared program (EU) provides students with the opportunity to explore major opportunities within The Grainger College of Engineering. Students are able to apply directly to EU as first-time freshmen or, if admitted to another college at Illinois, can apply to transfer via Intercollegiate Transfer to the program in their second and/or third semester at Illinois. External transfers to Illinois are not eligible for EU. Students will work with an Engineering Undeclared advisor to select coursework based on their interests with the purpose of exploring and declaring a major. All EU students must be declared in a major by the beginning of their fifth semester, but are eligible to apply to transfer as early as at the end of their second semester.
