for the Master of Science in Food Science and Human Nutrition, Professional Science Master's Concentration
The PSM involves rigorous scientific training in the area of food science and/or human nutrition; additionally, instruction is provided in applied business knowledge and skills. This program is designed for those who seek careers in a science-based setting with significant managerial and leadership responsibilities. For additional information go to our website.
PSM students typically complete the program in 18 months consisting of 3 full-time, on-campus semesters and a summer internship. Graduates are awarded a master's degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition with the Professional Science Master's concentration.
Admission
In addition to meeting the Graduate College admission requirements, a student planning to pursue a graduate degree in the department should have a baccalaureate degree in a recognized field of biological, physical, agricultural, or engineering science. Background deficiencies may be removed with graduate credit courses designed for this purpose.

All applicants whose native language is not English must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (iBT); or minimum International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic exam scores of 6.5 overall. Applicants may be exempt from the TOEFL if certain criteria are met. For those taking the TOEFL or IELTS, full admission status is granted for scores greater than 102 (TOEFL iBT), or 7.0 (IELTS). Limited status is granted for lesser scores and requires enrollment in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses based on an ESL Placement Test (EPT) taken upon arrival to campus.
All Food Science and Human Nutrition degrees are STEM-designated programs.
Financial Aid
Illinois PSM students may not hold assistantships or other tuition and fee waiver-generating appointments; statutory waivers and tuition scholarships are accepted.

for the Master of Science in Food Science and Human Nutrition: Professional Science Master's Concentration
- Advanced knowledge in general components of food science & human nutrition including food chemistry, food microbiology, food processing, synthetic biology and nutrition, with an expertise in the chosen area of specialization.
- Ability to apply basic scientific principles to solving real-world problems.
- Students will acquire foundational business knowledge in concepts including project management, finance and accounting.
- Students will acquire industry/internship experiences that will provide realistic experiences of job opportunities in their selected area of food or nutrition sciences.
- PSM students will learn professional skills, job seeking skills and the successful elements of professional teamwork to begin a successful career in the food and nutrition related industries.
