Overview
for the Graduate Certificate in Trauma-Informed Education (online)
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a Graduate Certificate in Trauma-Informed Education. The fully online certificate provides educators with foundational knowledge about trauma and its impact on teaching and learning. The Graduate Certificate introduces the principles and practices necessary for the support of children and youth impacted by trauma, and successful implementation of trauma-informed strategies in education contexts. The certificate can be stacked into the Curriculum and Instruction: Trauma-Informed Practice and Pedagogy Education Master's Degree.
Admission
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction carefully considers all applicants for graduate study. Interested applicants should start at the College of Education Graduate Programs website. The quality of the applicant's undergraduate and graduate training and grade point average are primary considerations. Other important factors evaluated include the three letters of recommendation and statement of purpose. International applicants must submit a TOEFL score.

Facilities and Resources
Departmental resources consist of cooperation with Children's Research Center, Center for Small Urban Communities, as well as other resources in the College. Students who are interested in second language acquisition can become a part of the SLATE program. The department is connected to the University of Illinois Writing Project and the following journals: International Journal of Education & the Arts, Journal of Curriculum Studies, and American Educational Research Journal. The department also has available resources and some workshops provided during the academic year. Program areas (including CREATE, DELTA, Language & Literacy, and MSE) offer discipline-specific resources.
The College of Education also has many resources to assist graduate students through their academic career. The Bureau of Educational Research works with students to secure research funding. The Council on Teacher Education entitles candidates seeking a Professional Educator License and provides accreditation of professional education programs. Each student completing a degree program is assigned a graduate adviser, who is available to assist the student with planning the program of study and determining degree requirements, courses and timelines for degree completion.

Graduation Requirements
Minimum Required Cumulative GPA: 3.0
Minimum hours require for Graduate Certificate completion: 12
Students who have successfully complete this certificate may use the certificate courses to satisfy the following degree requirements, provided they apply and are admitted to the degree program:
12 hours of coursework can apply to the EDM in Curriculum and Instruction, Trauma-Informed Practice and Pedagogy concentration.
No transfer credits can be used to satisfy Graduate Certificate requirements.

Upon completion of the Trauma-Informed Education Graduate Certificate, recipients will be able to:
- Recognize the needs of students impacted by trauma and the importance/role of trauma-informed educators.
- Address the needs of children, youth, and educators impacted by trauma and chronic stress.
- Structure trauma-informed learning environments for all children and youth.
- Implement trauma-informed practices in the learning environment.
- Apply the knowledge of trauma-informed education to serve as leaders of and advocates for trauma-informed education systems.
