Overview
for the Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology of Physical Activity (online)
Public health is an interdisciplinary field rooted in science and social justice that focuses on preventing disease and injury. Public health practitioners identify needs, craft interdisciplinary solutions to problems, and implement meaningful change to impact populations and make a real impact in the lives of others.
Across the three required courses, Certificate students will gain an understanding of foundational epidemiologic concepts, how these concepts are applied in physical activity and health practice, and how to conduct and critique research using advanced scientific methodologies. This Certificate provides additional training in a critical and growing area within Public Health for current practitioners, or an additional area of expertise for related fields such as Social Work, Nutrition, and Medicine.
Students who have successfully completed this Certificate may use the Certificate toward the Master of Public Health or Master of Public Health Online degrees.
Admission
Prospective applicants must apply for admission to this Graduate Certificate through the Graduate College admissions process. We will utilize a holistic admissions process, with the admissions review including academic history, resume, and personal statement. Admission requires a Bachelor’s degree and proof of English proficiency for international applicants.

Graduation Requirements
Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.0
Students who have successfully completed this 12-credit hour certificate may use the certificate to satisfy the following degree requirements, provided they apply and are admitted to the degree program:
12 hours toward required concentration courses for the MPH, Public Health, Concentration in Physical Activity and Health
or
4 hours toward Concentration Course of Choice requirement for the MPH, Epidemiology

- Evaluate physical activity levels and trends using surveillance techniques and measurement tools, incorporating public health and epidemiological perspectives.
- Analyze the determinants and health outcomes of physical activity, considering the factors that influence behaviors and their impact on public health.
- Apply evidence-based strategies to develop and evaluate physical activity intervention program across different population and setting.
