Courses
BULG 101 First-Year Bulgarian I credit: 4 Hours.
Introduction to the Bulgarian language and culture through an integrated approach combining speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Designed for beginners, the course develops basic communicative competence and introduces fundamental grammatical structures, vocabulary, and cultural practices.
BULG 102 First-Year Bulgarian II credit: 4 Hours.
Building on the foundations established in BULG 101, the course further develops communicative competence through expanded vocabulary and more complex grammatical structures, with continued emphasis on speaking, listening, reading, and writing in culturally appropriate contexts. Prerequisite: BULG 101 or equivalent by proficiency exam.
BULG 201 Second-Year Bulgarian I credit: 4 Hours.
Continuation of the study of Bulgarian at the intermediate level that strengthens command of the standard language through increased focus on grammatical accuracy, vocabulary development, and communicative competence in spoken and written contexts. Prerequisite: BULG 102 or equivalent by proficiency exam.
BULG 202 Second-Year Bulgarian II credit: 4 Hours.
Continuation of the study of Bulgarian at the intermediate level, with an emphasis on advanced grammatical accuracy and communicative competence. The course develops students’ ability to express themselves effectively in academic, professional, and cultural contexts. Prerequisite: BULG 201 or equivalent by proficiency exam.
BULG 481 Structure of Modern Bulgarian credit: 3 Hours.
Analysis of the sound system and grammar of the contemporary Bulgarian language. 3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. Prerequisite: RUSS 302 or equivalent.
BULG 482 Readings in Bulgarian Lit credit: 3 or 4 Hours.
Reading, analysis, and discussion of selected excerpts from Bulgarian literature, scientific prose, and the press. 3 undergraduate hours. 3 or 4 graduate hours. May be repeated if topics vary. Prerequisite: BULG 481 or consent of instructor.
